We provide the following services to families, schools and school districts for learners of all ages with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD/ADHD and other learning differences and/or behavioral challenges in New Jersey, New York and Long Island.
Individualized Language Assessments
We have added to our services Individualized Language Assessments. Our kids all need to acquire the skills of functional communication and there are a number of questions that need to be answered. Then, there needs to be a discussion of what will be practiced and how the child will be practicing his functional communication system…this is why we are conducting these assessments so that we can put your child on the correct path to becoming an effective communicator. For more advanced learners, there may be different language challenges. We will figure out exactly how to get started addressing these skills with your child during the Individualized Language Assessment. This assessment follows a method of flowcharting (see “Curriculum Development and Flowcharting”) that will systematically put the language pieces together for your child in a way that makes sense.
ABAskills: CONVERSATION TRAINING
Following an intake and identifying your main concerns we will schedule a time to come to your house and train you, therapists, special educators and caregivers (whomever you feel is relevant and interacts with your learner frequently) to employ behavior modification techniques to address the issues discussed during the intake.
This is an excellent cost-effective option for you if live in another state or country, especially in areas where there are little to no behavioral services available! In the past we had to drive endless hours or fly to see some families…now we have Skype! The Skype consultation takes the same form as the on-site consultation; all members attending the consultation work hands-on with the learner while receiving in the moment feedback. Please note that if you receive Skype consultation, we can still make arrangements to come and see you and your learners periodically.
IEP (Individualized Education Plan) Development
This is often necessary to be sure that the skills that your learner needs in order to communicate, be independent and be successful academically are targeted in a manner that breaks down each skill into smaller components and are then targeted in a way that will facilitate successful acquisition of new skills. Also, since your learner is in school approximately 30 hours per week, doesn’t it make sense that what is being taught is actually what should be taught?
Periodic video review of parents and staff demonstrating techniques discussed and demonstrated at the consultation raises issues regarding treatment integrity; in other words, we make sure that recommendations provided during consultations are being carried out correctly. This is especially useful and cost-effective for families who live in other states or have instructors working with their children that miss the consultations.
This service is necessary to be sure that everyone working with your learner is on the same page. Certainly, there are some schools that are more open to this than others, but it has been our experience that working with schools to collaborate and not to judge or criticize them can be very effective at forming a more cohesive program across settings. Also, there have been times when something that we have recommended looks good on paper and may be effective in the learner’s home but may not be so great for school…so, it makes sense at that point that we collaborate with school staff to either make the appropriate modifications to the current plan so it can work in school or we collectively develop a new plan.
Sometimes you have your consultations provided by other consultants and/or programs and are very happy with the way things are going. Once in a while though, you may just want a “new set of eyes” to take an objective look at what is going on or just to troubleshoot a few issues. We are more than happy to collaborate! We certainly know the value of collaboration with other professionals for the benefit of your learner!
This can be done as needed, Skype preferred!
